What are white people trying to maintain, and what do we fear, when we attack a vital, international culture of which we are ignorant? We are saying that English is the language of culture and acheivement, and European-based civilization is the source of all beneficial contributions to the world. We are also saying that the lives, thoughts, feelings, and cultures of [cultures'] people are insignificant and do not count. We are, in addition, demonstrating that white racism is not only about economic and political domination, but is also about cultural hegemony. It is about white people and white institutions being able to define what culture is, who gets to participate in it, and what language, literature, art, and music are included in it. White racism is about control of the cultural content of people's lives.
