"Algae can be used for a lot more than wrapping sushi. The single-celled plants may be a key factor in the fight against global warming. Inventor Isaac Berzin, with help from MIT, has discovered that pumping smokestack emissions through a "bioreactor" filled with an algal mixture removes nearly all of the harmful gases, reports Plenty (Oct./Nov. 2005). Even better, the green sludge that grows in the system can be processed into biodiesel and other clean fuels. "Right now, power plants think of emissions as pollution," says Berzin. "Not algae. Algae think they're great food."
